wild guess, unplug from wall socket probably so the "computer inside will reset. Otherwise, there is a printed circuit board that is "messed" up. Probably bad capacitors and other electronic components.

Hi. It only happens when a function is not complete in another mode, so it will definitely be waiting for completion of last function. Since you don't know what it was, you can flag clear it to jump back to REG mode:
Turn key to PROGRAM mode.Turn power off at wall.Hold RECEIPT FEED down - keep your finger on it.Turn power on at wall.Wait 5 seconds, then let go of RECEIPT FEED.You should see "FFFFFFFFFF" on display.Press SUBTOTAL.wait for printout.Turn key back to REG mode.Note: You may have to sign back on (clerk buttons)
