yes we use these extensively for years, a backup media
I have like 5 of them , in home one for everyone here.
first off no LAPTOP stated
, makers name and model, why post lacking this key fact, and no Canvio model stated. But... googling..
Ok the maker tells me its a HDTB420XK3AA
it is 2TB HDD and not a 2TB SSD so has motor that is dead.
why is complex. but POWER IS BAD 99% chance.
the HDD uses lots of current, most need 2amps of current to run right and some 1amp, but the silly maker does not disclose what drives is actually inside nor the startup or run time current flows.(bad seller they are !)
so that means what? , Vast laptops made for 20 years will not run the drive only on a USB port, ok,
NO PC STATED, SO NO SAVVY ANSWERS BUT....
now some facts.
USB ports vary by 100mA (0.1A) TO 900mA (0.9A)
IF Your PC does not supply at least 1amp to the HDD it may fail.
mine all need 2amps to run, so a power pack is added to each HDD casing jack. but I bet yours hasa tiny slow 2.5" hDD and needs about 1amp to run. and will fail on vast older laptops. for sure. 100MA fail, 500mA PC usb power failed.
HERE IS HOW TO PROVE the case and true cause.,
1: TEST IT ON ANOTHER PC , DESKTOP WORKS BEST.
2: TURN OFF SLEEP ON THE USB PORTS.(cp = POWER SET)
3: BE INTERNET CONNECTED OR THE DRIVERS(SW) WILL NOT PNP LOAD AND MAKE THE DRIVE WORK.
if you read this, mess, below link you learn that USB has evolved fast from 1996 to NOW.
and USB-C PC PC can run you hdd easy now. see this reason.
so the answer is learn to find a PC that can FLOW 1amp of current on the USB port, (rare ) but can be found on NEW PC's only.
the answer to is this, next time only buy external HDD enclosures that has its OWN power pack that way it will run on ANY PC made.
Next time post what PC you own.
or ask them what is the power limits on your USB ports.
I bet you will not be happy with the answer, !@
