Does it crank, that is first , starting is 2nd.
if it cranks, but will not start. that means
you lost spark , check for spark
if spark is good, check fueling

Check the compression. If it has low compression it will always be difficult to start. I have the same bike. It is a really good starter, comparatively to other older 'cycles I own. 1) Check the fuel level in the tank, and be sure to turn the fuel switch (left side of bike below tank and seat) to On, or even Reserve 2) In stock tuning, my bike likes full choke for cold start, in any ambient temperature, it likes to warm up with the choke on, until it starts to sputter from the rich mixture. 3) I believe this bike has vacuume tube that goes to the fuel petcock, this shuts off fuel to carbs when bike is not running. Thus if the bike has not run in a while, or the carbs drained, it will take several start attempts to get the carb float bowls filled. 4) This bike is hard to start if the battery is old or marginally charged. 5) Also pull the spark plugs, if they are brown, or black, change them. 6) check the air cleaner, if it is too dirty it will essentially act like a choke

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The clicking sound is significant. It indicates that the starter relay is working and the safety features/interlocks are not faulty. A few tests to try:
  • locate the starter motor relay by following the cable from the battery's + terminal;
  • remove the rubber cap/cover to expose the 2 big terminals of the relay;
  • verify by pressing on starter button. Click should be heard/felt on the relay;
  • temporarily jumper the 2 big terminals on the nuts (not on the threaded portion);
  • if the starter motor spins, the starter motor relay is faulty, specifically the contactors;
  • if the motor does not turn, then most likely a faulty starter motor, specifically the carbon brushes.
Although, it is also possible for the starter motor not to spin if the engine has seized. A way to check is to engaged the bike in gear and try to turn the rear tire. If the tire/chain/transmission/engine turns, then it would be the starter motor.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

2. Dirt, rust, water, or ethanol sludge in the fuel system.
3. Sticky throttle cables.
4. Multiple carburetors not in synchronization.
5. TPS sensor out of adjustment or faulty.
6. Wrong spark plugs for the type of service.
7. Throttle bodies not in synchronization (FI)
8. Faulty O2 sensor.
9. Clogged, stuck, or faulty IAC valve.
10. Aftermarket components are not compatible with ECM.

Hi, Jdebord if you have a CKP sensor it needs compression to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in the head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

Hi, Otis the vast majority of service, parts fiche, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee of $20 and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available and some were never printed in English. The Indian and Philippine markets are usually in E-book format only, for these rare occasions I shall look on eBay and find the cheapest one available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. If there is no $ sign after the manual link it is free to download.
