Hi,
Put simply,
Electrical;
Are the plug gaps correct.?
Is the points gap correct.?
Are there any loose connections on the Low-Tension ignition leads.?
Is the distributor cap in good condition.?
Are all the High-Tension ignition leads in good condition.?
Is the coil OK.?
Is the ignition timing correct.?

Fuel;
Are you actually getting fuel at the carburettor or injectors.?
Is there an inline filter & is it blocked.?
Is there a filter inside the carburettor or inside the injection pump & is it blocked.?
Is there a filter on the fuel pick-up pipe inside the fuel tank & is it blocked.?
Is the fuel very old, because old fuel will lose it's octane rating.?

Also, take the air filter out whilst you're trying to get it started as that may help. Remember to put it back in afterwards.

What should the heater core inlet hose temperature be?


It sounds as if you have a blockage in your heater core itself. You can usually remove both hoses from the core at the firewall and using compressed air, blow backwards into the heater core until it is cleared. While you are there I would suggest changing the plastic elbows that come off of the engine if they have not been changed already as they are known to crack and cause problems. They are even remaking them in metal instead of the plastic.

Have a lo\low test done on the radiator and check for blocked cores. Replace the radiator if necessary as it will not flush clean. check condition of the bottom radiator hose and if it squashes in easily then have it replaced also.

Go to the front power distribution box and check 30A fuse 20 (GRN/BRN wire) which feed power to the blower relay. When the ignition switch is in START or RUN position, the relay closes and power is fed to the final stage unit. Depending upon the state of the automatic climate control module, power output from the final stage module is applied to the blower motor. If checking all this does not solve the problem, you may have a clogged heater core

Coolant smell inside cab when you turn on car/heat


Likely you are in the beginning stage of a heater core leak. at this point, you may be able to temporarily solve the problem by using a good system sealer (I'm partial to the kind that comes as a silver powder) Since we don't actually know the condition of the core, temporary may mean a week or several years, but replacement is expensive and time consuming so I'd definitely give it a try.

I have a 2000 Chevy Cavalier the heater and the rear defogger doesnt work both quit working at same time


Try taking a hose off the heater core for the front heater to see if your core is blocked, this might indicate a core cleaning.  As for your rear window defogger, the wire that usually feeds the  heater might be severed or cracked and you might not get a proper contact. Take the small plug off the heater strip and stick an Ohm meter on it to see if you have an open or closed circuit.
